East Grinstead Junior Netball League currently only runs primary school netball in the form of High 5 netball (as played in most primary schools). It is the massively popular entry game of netball and is a great way for kids to get active, enjoy themselves and make new friends. It's designed specifically for children aged 9 - 11 and uses fun and variety to get them into the game, polish skills and aid fitness.

An Introduction To High Five Netball

The Basics

The game is aimed at girls and boys in school years 4, 5 & 6 (aged 9-11).
The design of High 5 netball is to encourage a flowing game through which players can build up a range of movement skills and develop the concept of team work, whilst improving their health and fitness at the same time.

The rules of High 5 netball have been tailored from 7 a-side netball to allow players greater freedom around the court and more time in which to make their decisions and to act upon them. The High 5 team consists of a minimum of 7 players with 5 on court at any one time.

Matches are usually 4 quarters of 6 minutes each, at each interval the squad members’ positions are ‘rotated’.  Each player must play in at least 2 different positions in each match (for example shooting/ centre/ defending).

The team is made up of the following positions GS (Goal Shooter), GA (Goal Attack), C (Centre), GD (Goal Defence) and GK (Goal Keeper).  Substitutions may be made at any time in the event of illness or injury. Players are allowed in the areas shown below.

High Five Rules

All these rules will be explained to you in details at your training sessions.  You must pass or shoot for goal within 4 seconds and obey the footwork rule (see below).

You may not:

  1. Deliberately kick the ball
  2. Bounce the ball more than once
  3. Hand or roll the ball to another player
  4. Place your hands on a ball held by an opponent
  5. Throw the ball whilst sitting or lying on the ground
  6. Use the goalpost as a support in receiving a ball or to gain balance
  7. Throw the ball over a complete third of the court without it being touched or caught by another player in that third of the court
  8. Regain possession of the ball, having dropped or thrown it, before it has been touched by another player.

The Footwork Rule

  1. You may receive the ball with one foot grounded or may jump to catch and land on one foot.  While that landing foot remains on the ground the other foot may be moved in any direction and any number of times, pivoting on the landing foot if desired.  Hopping is not allowed.
  2. You may receive the ball whilst both feet are grounded, or may jump to catch and land on both feet simultaneously.  You may then choose to move either foot, and the remaining foot shall then be considered to be the landing foot.

Scoring a Goal - A goal is only scored by the Goal Shooter or Goal Attack from within the shooting circle, when the ball has passed completely through the netball ring.

Obstruction - You must be allowed to throw or shoot without being impeded by the defender.  The defender is allowed one jump to intercept a throw or shot at goal.  The defender must be at least 1 metre away from the attacking player.  Arms should not be outstretched prior to the jump.

Contact - No one is allowed to knock or push another player or interfere with their play either accidentally or deliberately.

Offside – You are offside if you enter an area of the court which you are not allowed.
Throw-In – When the ball goes out of the court area a throw-in is taken at the point where the ball crossed the line.  Only players allowed in that area of the court may take the throw-in.  Both your feet must be behind the line.
